Three- and four-level spiral phase plates

We analytically and numerically demonstrate that an optical vortex with topological charge 1 is formed near an optical axis or at the center of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern, in domain approximately equaled to the Airy disk, during plane-wave diffraction at three- and four-level spiral phase plates (SPP), with triangle and square apertures. Composite SPPs assembled from six or four of these three- and four-level SPPs may build up optical vortices with topological charges 2 and 4.
